Brooklyn Orthodontics & Braces
Dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces, are devices used in orthodontics to align and straighten teeth. Often utilized to correct underbites, overbites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, malocclusions, crooked teeth and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw, braces can improve a person's bite, while also working to improve overall dental health.
Common Types of Braces
Traditional Braces: Metal wired braces (often stainless steel sometimes combined with titanium) are the most common type of dental braces which consist of a metal bracket with elastic rubber band ties holding the wire in place within the metal brackets.
Self Ligating Braces: Unline traditional braces, self ligating braces do not require the need for the rubber bands as the wire goes through the bracket. Often with this type of braces the treatment time, discomfort and required adjustments are all less than that of traditional braces.
Progressive, Clear Removable Aligners: Unlike traditional braces that consist of small brackets glued to the front of each tooth and anchors on the molars, the most recent innovation in braces technology is removable aligners. Removable aligners offer a less invasive option to gradually move teeth into their final position. Products like Invisalign offer a less noticeable treatment without the need for wires or tightening, however aligners are not generally used for complex orthodontic cases such as when extractions, jaw surgery or palate expansion are necessary.
